2011 Lexus LFA - Preview

by Joe LaMuraglia I'm in Miami, FL as a guest of Lexus to drive their new supercar - the Lexus LFA. It is the first attempt by the Japanese luxury car manufacturer to create a car to compete with the super exotics from Europe. It features a 4.8-liter V10 engine that generates 552 hp and 354 lb.-ft. of torque for a max speed of 202- mph. The engine is unique to the LFA and is mated to a unique six-speed Automated Sequential Gearbox (ASG). I'll be updating via Twitter during the day. 1966-1972 Lamborghini Miura

When the Miura prototype made its debut at the 1965 Turin auto show, it did so without its shapely body. Even as a naked chassis, the car caused a stir, with its transverse-mounted V-12 and its unified cylinder block and transaxle. Before the show was over, Lamborghini had hired Italy's Bertone coachworks to drape a body over it. At Bertone, the job was started by Giorgetto Giugiaro and finished by Marcello Gandini. The bodywork was completed just in time for the 1966 Geneva show, where the car was revealed in stunning red-orange livery. Bob Wallace, one of Lamborghini's triumvirate of young engineers who built the car, remembered, "People went stark, raving mad over it." They still do.

BYD, China's biggest battery maker, isn't wasting any time carving its niche in the new world of electric cars and plug-in hybrids. It all started with the F6DM plug-in hybrid sedan, followed by the smaller and less expensive F3DM plug-in hybrid compact car.
Now BYD has introduced its E6 electric car at the Beijing International Auto Show. It takes the shape of a crossover, or MPV, and will be built on on the F6's platform (same as the F6DM, which could be sold in Europe by 2010).

So far, all we know is that the E6 will be a 5 seater with an acceleration of 0 to 100 kph of around 10 seconds. Top speed should be top speed of 160 kph (100 mph), and the battery pack, which is located under the rear passenger seats, will be based on BYD's own lithium-ion iron phosphate technology. Range per charge is expected to be 300 km (186 miles).
But most impressive of all:
"BYD projected the battery had a life of 2,000 cycles, for a lifetime range of about 600,000 km (373,000 miles)"
Wow! Even if thats just half true, it's still pretty good.

Charging of the battery will take the night with 220V, but the E6 electric car can also take a fast charge that can bring the battery to 80% SOC in about 15 minutes.
BYD says that it could start producing the E6 within two years. Another one to follow.

Auto show's coolest cars

Daily News writer Patrick Huguenin takes a look some of the cars from the 2008 New York International Auto Show. First up: BEST MOVIE HERO CAR: Audi R8 V12 TDI Le Mans concept: The Audi R8 has already earned its spot in pop culture. Courteney Cox uses one to zip around Tinseltown in FX's tabloid drama "Dirt." She'd be lucky to get her hands on a Le Mans concept version, which upgrades the engine to a 12-cylinder that runs on diesel. It's got a paparazzi-chasing top speed of just under 200 mph, but it's also fuel efficient. We know James Bond loves his Aston Martins, but wouldn't fuel efficiency and lower emissions give a good guy more room to be bad?

New Toyota USA

Toyota's media reception this evening, new Toyota USA President Jim Lentz revealed the company's latest concept, the A-BAT hybrid pickup. We first saw pics of the new concept a couple of weeks ago but in person it is quite a bit more striking. Given how much "small" trucks have grown over the past two decades it was quite refreshing to see such a small truck on display. The extended cab unit body design actually looks quite sharp in person and the flexibility afforded by the Chevy Avalanche like mid-gate makes it actually useful for hauling decent sized loads, as long as they aren't too heavy. With both the tailgate and mid-gate folded the A-BAT has an eight foot bed with four feet between the side walls.

Super Car: Tesla Roadster unveiled

Tesla Motors unveiled their uber-chic Roadster, a powerful electric vehicle that looks, feels and drives like many other high-end sports cars Wednesday night. The main difference is the noise. Powered by a 3-phase, 4-pole AC induction motor, the Roadster can go 130 mph and does 0-60 in about 4 seconds, all completely silent.

Tonight was the grand unveiling of the Roadster in a decorated airport hangar in Santa Monica, CA. I don't ride in many sports cars, and I certainly have never been in one that zips across an airport's tarmac without so much as a whisper. But tonight I got a quick ride in the Roadster and all I could hear from the passenger's seat (not even Gov. Schwarzenegger, who flew in for a brief look at the car, was allowed to drive it) was wind noise. And myself saying "Wow" under my breath.

The car is low to the ground, and smooth in all possible ways. But this vehicle isn't just a sports car. It's also a green car. There are zero tailpipe emissions. There isn't even a tailpipe. Tesla Motors is working to provide purchasers with a photovoltaic panel that will turn the driving experience into an actual net producer of energy, according to Tesla Motors chairman Elon Musk.

2009 Kia Soul

On Monday, September 22, 2008, Kia Motors debuted Scion xD look-alike, the 2009 Kia Soul, at the Seoul Motor Show in Seoul, South Korea.

Intended to be the flagship vehicle for Kia’s brand new design direction, the Kia Soul illustrates the heavy influence of newly hired head designer, Peter Schreyer, formerly of Volkswagen.
Described as an “urban crossover”, the Kia Soul is powered by either an 124-hp 1.6L or 142-hp 2.0L engine and is expected to be extremely fuel efficient. Although official details will be withheld until its grand entrance at the Paris Auto Show in October, the Kia Soul Hybrid concept reportedly averaged 50 mpg, which experts predict will translate to about 30-40 mpg for the production version.

Bugatti Veyron Nocturne

Bugatti shows three new special editions of their Bugatti Veyron and Veyron Grand Sport at the Dubai Motor Show today which are exclusively build for the Middle East market. The three special editions consist of one Grand Sport and two regular Veyron models. Like previous special editions, the three editions shown in Dubai feature special exterior and interior colours and use of special materials like magnesium and platinum.
The Bugatti Veyron Nocturne is the first of these special editions and is limit to just five pieces.
